Description & History
This Chloé Paraty Small in its speculoos caramel shade is one of the most endearing bags of its generation — supple, lightweight, with that characteristic gold-tone hardware that tinkles gently and that warm color that goes with everything. A bag you take out in the morning without a second thought and rediscover in the evening with the same pleasure.
The Paraty was launched in 2008 by Hannah MacGibbon, then Chloé's creative director, and very quickly became one of the house's most iconic bags — a direct heir to the Paddington in terms of desirability, with the same ability to generate waiting lists and become the daily companion of all the it-girls of the late 2000s. Its name is that of a coastal town in Brazil, chosen to evoke the lightness and bohemian spirit that the house of Chloé has cultivated since its founding by Gaby Aghion in 1952. Now officially discontinued, the Paraty is increasingly difficult to find in good condition on the secondary market — and examples with complete documentation (original card and papers) are becoming rapidly rarer.
What distinguishes the Paraty from all its contemporaries is its deliberately thin-cut leather to reduce weight — supple without being soft, structured without being rigid — and its characteristic hardware: twisted gold-tone rings, leather stirrups that hold the handles, a toggle opening that gives its unique sculptural character to the silhouette. The speculoos caramel shade of this example is particularly successful — neither too pale beige nor too dark brown, this warm caramel naturally matches the gold-tone hardware and looks equally good with jeans or a dress.
